Where’s the cheapest supermarket to get your food essentials in Cumbria?

As eagle-eyed shoppers are looking for the best deal at the supermarket and food prices are rising to an all-time high – Cumbria Crack has come to the rescue.

We were shocked to discover that Lurpak had risen to £9 in some places across the country – so our intrepid reporters went out to Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Tesco to hunt down where you can find the cheapest most common food items.

From baby formula being kept safe from shoplifters with security tags to 190g of coffee clocking in at nearly £7, it’s clear to us, let alone the experts, that we are facing a food crisis.

While Morrisons was once considered the UK’s cheapest supermarket, 2.5kg of potatoes are now a whopping £1.19, in comparison to the likes of Tesco, where the same amount is only 89p.

Lurpak prices across the county have risen in line with the changes across the rest of the UK, with 750g weighing in at £7.25 in both Sainsbury’s and Morrisons.

Tins of beans have also been subject to rising costs, with four tins of Heinz sitting at £2.89 at the very cheapest in Asda, and at their highest, £3.50 in Sainsbury’s.

The eight most common items included two litres of milk, a loaf of bread, coffee, teabags, butter, beans, chicken and potatoes and basket totals across all the shops we visited hit double figures.

Items we included covered both the supermarket’s own items and named brands from the four big store’s that we found were the most accessible across Cumbria.

Prices do vary – sometimes daily – and we did not include any special offers. These prices are a guide only.
