A Cumbrian group is celebrating World Embroidery Day later this month by creating a series of postcards from the county – and want people to take part.
Cumberland Textile and Stitch Group will stitch in public to share their love of embroidery and create a piece of work celebrating a day in the life of Cumbria.
Passionate embroiderers are encouraged to visit a public venue and stitch a postcard-sized piece.
Group members will be at:
- Beatrix Potter’s garden at Hill Top
- Wordsworth House and Gardens, Cockermouth
- The costume gallery at Tullie House Museum
- Carlisle Cathedral
- Walltown Crags, Hadrians Wall
- Hammond’s Pond, Carlisle
The group also plan to include words they hear from the public – such as “it’s a beautiful day”, “let’s go for coffee”, “ did you hear about…” and “did she really??!” – meaning that the piece will reflect the day in the life of Cumbria.
Jane Clark, the group’s chair, said: “World Embroidery Day is a great opportunity to show that textile art isn’t just old fashioned but can be fun and a great way to connect with the community.
“We want to take over local beauty spots and raise the profile of what we do, to create a piece of art that is a snapshot of Cumbria.”
When completed the final textile art piece, made up of the finished postcards, will be put on display.
