Conservative MPs have begun to choose the next leader of the party and the country’s next Prime Minister.
Five candidates remain in the contest following the second round of voting by Tory MPs – Suella Braverman was eliminated with the fewest votes. The next ballot of the party’s MPs is due to take place on Monday.
The first round of voting took place on Wednesday seeing former Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak gain the most votes. Chancellor of the Exchequer Nadhim Zahawi and senior Conservative Jeremy Hunt were knocked out of the contest.
Tom Tugendhat, who has been endorsed by Carlisle MP John Stevenson and Penrith and the Border MP Neil Hudson, also made it through to the next round of voting.
Workington MP Mark Jenkinson initially supported Nadhim Zahawi, but now looks like he is backing Liz Truss.
A debate between the remaining candidates will be broadcast on Channel 4 tonight.
Boris Johnson announced his resignation last Thursday and is set to stay on as Prime Minister until September when the next Conservative Party leader is selected.
