Whitehaven Rugby League Club’s junior champion is asking townspeople to turn out to support their local team.
Whitehaven face Leigh Centurions on Sunday and Carl Walmsley, who is also a local councillor, wants to see as many people as possible there to cheer on the home side.
He said: “The attendance has been really disappointing truth be told. Last Sunday we had second in the league Featherstone Rovers made up of Super League standard players at the LEL Arema.
“Our lads did themselves proud and representing the town with pride, it must be so disheartening in front of a crowd of about 680 in a so-called rugby town, which is home to thousands.
“I hope all fans come down in force to welcome Leigh this week boasting players like Josh Charnley and the much talked about Blake Ferguson.
“The club opens their arms to all who can make it – be it diehard fan or first timers. Amateur players or Super League followers, come and get your rugby fix – you will not be disappointed.
“The club are hoping to put some ticket deals on for the remainder of the home games but it’s too much of a gamble while getting less than four figures.
“Please get down and support your local semi-professional rugby league team in the hub of the community so we can generate the money to keep some of these exciting players and to potentially bring in more to push on next year and get in a better position for the reconstruction of the leagues in 2024.
“In my role I would like to openly invite as many juniors as possible the remaining games will be free for those with memberships, free with a full paying adult or £5 if alone.
“But the bread and butter of the club is the adults tickets are only £10 before 1pm and £17 after as a club we are looking at the prices and hoping to see the season out with some ticket deals so help us help you help us and come down and support the boys in the famous chocolate, gold and blue.”
