Got a spare £10,000 a month? A Cumbrian castle is up for rent

Greystoke Castle near Penrith

If money is no object then a historical Grade II listed seven-bedroom castle on the edge of the Lake District with superb grounds and gardens could be yours to play king or queen.

Greystoke Castle, five miles out of Penrith and 13 from Keswick, has become available on a long-term lease for £10,000 a month with offers considered.

For centuries it was the historic seat of the Howard family, and has been brought to market by exclusive agents Finest Properties, based in Corbridge, Northumberland, which specialises in unique and distinctive real estate.

It has a genuinely fascinating history including fires, rebuilds, an attack by Cromwell, dukes, a Second World War story, and even linked to a book and a 1984 film – Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes, starring smouldering French-American heart-throb Christopher Lambert, now aged 65.

“Interested parties may wish to consider options such as the creation of a magnificent wedding venue, or a magical venue for luxurious entertainment events,” said Finest Properties.

“The beautiful exterior reflects the heritage of the castle and is matched by extraordinary characterful reception rooms including the breathtaking great hall.

“Vast entertaining spaces and multiple bedrooms offer huge flexibility, and there is enormous scope to develop the accommodation, subject to securing the necessary consents.”

But if the price tag doesn’t scare you, there are tales of up to nine different ghosts – two more than there are bedrooms for.

These include a monk interred behind a wall who apparently likes to knock in the night, a guest who mysteriously disappeared, a white lady who sits in a corner observing human life, and even the Devil himself has darkened the door, according to the website The Great British Ghost Tour.

It’s also listed in the top 10 most haunted places in Cumbria and its most recent owner is reported to have seen ghosts for himself, according to those close to the castle.
