Kings Gaming will vacate this building on Victoria Viaduct, making way for the Citadel redevelopment

Plans have been lodged to move an adult gaming centre from one Carlisle city centre building to another to making way for the redevelopment of the historic Citadel buildings.

Carlisle City Council has received the planning application from Kings Gaming who hope to move from its existing base on 94 English Street to 84 English Street, which is currently used for retail.

The Borderlands funded redevelopment of Carlisle’s Grade II listed Citadel buildings into a new University of Cumbria campus means that Kings Gaming must move from it’s current base to a retail unit at the top of the high street.

Agent for the application, Woods Whur said: “The applicant has agreed to purchase the freehold 94 English Street. There will be an investment on top of this to refurbish the interior of the premises, and between eight and 10 staff will be employed at the new premises. The premises are currently vacant.”

If its proposal is approved by the city council, Kings Gaming hopes to turn the vacant unit flanked by The Works and Clydesdale Bank into a gaming centre.

The agent said the proposal would contribute positively “to the vibrancy and vitality of the local economy by providing a leisure use within the city centre, which is attractive both to customers using retail shops and the other mix of uses in the centre.”

It said adult gaming stores “do not result in undue noise and disturbance from customers and provide a limited catering offer such as tea, coffee, soft drinks and biscuits.

Woods Whur said a cross-section of adults with a male to female 50-50 split would use gaming centre, contributing to the economy.

It added: “Adult gaming centres contribute to the economy of an area and reports confirm that for every £10 of turnover directly generated, a further £8.04 turnover is supported in the wider economy.

“For every 10 jobs directly generated by adult gaming centres, a further 7.2 jobs are supported in the economy.”
