Man to stand trial accused of assault, affray and illegally having hammer

A man accused of affray, illegal possession of a hammer and assault will stand trial in front of a jury later this year.

John Timperon, 27, faced three charges when he appeared at Carlisle Crown Court earlier today.

One alleges the illegal possession of an offensive weapon — a hammer — in public at Friars Garth, Abbeytown, without lawful authority or reasonable excuse.

A second charge alleges affray and that he used or threatened unlawful violence towards other persons, and that his conduct was such as would cause a person of reasonable firmness present at the scene to fear for their personal safety.

And a third charge alleges the common assault of a woman.

All three allegations arise out of incidents which are said to have occurred between April 5 and 8 this year.

During a brief appearance in front of Judge Richard Archer, Timperon entered not guilty pleas to each of the charges when they were put to him.

A trial is due to take place at the crown court in the week of November 21. It is estimated that will last around three to four days.

In the meantime Timperon, of Cusack Crescent, Workington, was granted bail on the strict conditions that he does not contact named witnesses in the case, and does not enter Abbeytown.
