Rail passengers told not to travel as train drivers strike over pay

Rail passengers hoping to travel on the West Coast Main Line on Saturday are being told to stay at home by operator Avanti.

Avanti West Coast said it was not running any services as drivers represented by the Aslef union go on strike.

Union members at seven train firms are going on strike after a pay deal could not be reached. Aslef said the companies ‘failed to make a pay offer to help members keep pace with the increase in the cost of living’.

Avanti said: “The intercity operator is unable to operate any of its services along its west coast route for the whole day.

“The action has been co-ordinated by ASLEF across other train operators. As a result, options to travel by rail will be extremely limited on the West Coast Main Line between London, Scotland, and North Wales. Many destinations will have no rail connectivity on August 13 and rail replacement services will not be in place either.”

Passengers are urged to claim a refund or switch their day of travel – people will be able to use August 13 tickets up to and including August 16.

Further strike action by the RMT and TSSA unions is planned for August 18 and 20, which will also impact Avanti West Coast services.
