A large chunk of the second day was lost through the weather at Furness as Cumbria were kept waiting to continue their reply.
They did not get underway until 5pm chasing Hertfordshire’s 267 all-out in their final NCCA Championship game.
Skipper Matthew Sempill and Sam Dutton resumed on 107-4 and they took their partnership to 43 before the captain was out for 32.
Dutton forged on to make 56 before he was clean bowled by Jigar Mehta, with Cumbria on 162-7.
The tail didn’t wag on this occasion and with Sam Medhurst unable to bat because of what appeared to be a broken thumb, the innings closed on 183-9.
Ben Waring (3-36) and Ishaan Kaushal (3-72) were the leading wicket-takers for the visitors.
Just 9.1 overs were bowled before the close and when Ben Walkden removed
Patel for five with the first ball of his fifth over it ended the day’s play.
Hertfordshire were 16-1, a lead of exactly 100 going into the final day.
