Barrow to host sounds from far and wide in unique listening space

A unique listening space is set to fill Barrow Park with sounds from overseas next week.

Visitors to the park’s bowling green will be able to hear live audio streams from around the world in PITCH, a portable listening space for sound and performance.

PITCH, whose canopies have been designed and printed by pupils of Yarlside Academy, is also the place for family friendly performances, workshops and activities.

On Tuesday, visitors can discover how PITCH was designed and built as well as listening to harpist, Mary Borgia, who’ll play a range of tunes and improvise along with the environmental audio streams.

There’s also a sonic scavenger hunt, an easy to follow list of sounds to collect from around the park alone or as a team.

Cellist Maja Bugge will provides the live music on Wednesday when there’s also a chance to hear audio streams from across Europe and beyond on a multi-speaker system inside PITCH.

Visitors can also print and take home their own cyanotype blueprints.

The activities are hosted by Barrow-based sound art organisation, Full of Noises as part of their work with Acoustic Commons, an emerging network of live environmental streams drawing attention to the unique sounds of particular places across Europe and beyond. It is co-funded by the Creative Europe programme.

The portable auditorium was designed by London-based musician Michael Speers and Public Works, a not-for-profit design practice filling a gap between architecture, art and performance.

The events will run from August 23 and 24 and the public can drop in anytime between 1 and 5pm.
