A Cumbrian secondary school have said they won’t become complacent following a positive report from the education watchdog.
Caldew School, on Carlisle Road, was inspected and judged as good by Ofsted in June. While inspectors found strengths in areas such as breadth and ambition in the curriculum and good student behaviour, headteacher Vicki Jackson said they wouldn’t take the report for granted.
She said: “We will not become complacent now that we have been judged as good. We know that there are areas where we can improve and we are determined to give every child who attends Caldew School the best education possible. The report reflects our drive to improve and recognises the hardworking staff and wonderful students.”
The Ofsted inspectors noted that significant improvements had been made following it’s previous inspection that found the school required improvement.
The June report said: “Leaders have made significant progress in improving the school since the previous inspection. They have focused on creating a broad and ambitious curriculum which meets the needs of pupils and students, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).
“Leaders have created a welcoming and supportive environment at this school. Pupils and students achieve well in their learning. They are well prepared for their next steps in education, employment or training and students are proud to attend Caldew School. They feel well supported, happy and safe in this welcoming community. There are high levels of trust and respect between pupils, students and staff”
The report also highlights strengths in effective assessment, the provision for students with special educational needs, student confidence that if they report any issues they will be dealt with, personal development in Y7-11, careers guidance in Y7-13, extra-curricular clubs and safeguarding.
Vicki added the school is proud of their students and grateful for the support of parents, staff and their governing body and chair.
The report judged the five areas of the school’s performance as follows:
Quality of Education Good
Behaviour Good
Personal Development Good
Leadership Good
Sixth Form Good
