Mitchells’ latest antiques and fine art sale saw Beatles and autographs and a Percy Kelly watercolour prove popular with buyers.
The landscape watercolour by Kelly sold for £5,000 – making it the top lot in the Cockermouth auction.
Four other artworks by the same artist also greatly exceeded their estimates including an ink wash illustrated letter sold for £3,600, a rare abstract oil on canvas laid to board which made £2,800 and a watercolour of a trawler sold for £2,200.
And a set of Beatles autographs, signed at the ABC Cinema in Lincoln on November 28 1963 sold for £3,900.
Another high selling lot was a vintage Volvo 120 series saloon motor car, which made £4,400.
A Mitchells spokesman said: “The sale got off to a cracking start when the first lot, an 18th century Chinese export Qianlong part dinner service, sold for £1,900 making it the highest selling lot among the ceramics. Other high prices soon followed amongst the jewellery with an 18ct white gold set tennis bracelet selling for £3,800 and an 18ct gold diamond cluster ring making £2,200. The most valuable watch was a ladies Rolex Cellini 18ct gold wristwatch, which sold for £3,300.“
The sale also featured contents of Howard House in Great Corby, near Carlisle, the home of a prominent antiques and fine art collector, which included a late 19th/early 20th century French Vernis Martin cabinet. It sold for £3,200, which was the highest selling piece of furniture in the sale.
Contents also featured a collection of paintings by the landscape artist William Mellor (1851-1931) including two triptychs which sold for £2,500 and £2,400 each.
Most valuable clocks were an Edwardian Elliott mahogany cased triple fuse bracket clock which made £2,400 and an 18th century long case clock by Gandy Cockermouth sold for £2,300.
