The M6 is closed between Junctions 44 and 43 for southbound traffic.
Police are currently on the scene dealing with an overturned trailer and drivers are urged to seek alternative routes.
The trailer was carrying livestock and National Highways North West said the transfer of the livestock will shortly take place.
