A Cumbrian chef has been shortlisted for a new award celebrating diversity in the hospitality industry.
Nina Matsunaga, co-owner and head chef at the Black Bull in Sedbergh, is a finalist in the chef of the year category in the BIH Spotlight Awards.
The Black Bull is a fusion of Japanese, German, and English cultures.
Nina said:” I am thrilled to be announced as a finalist for a BIH Spotlight Award. It’s a huge positive to help grow people’s awareness and understanding that all backgrounds can contribute positively to the UK food industry. Everyone can bring something from their cultural heritage to the fore regarding creativity and innovation, which can lead to amazing outcomes and collaborations.”
The winners will be announced at an event in London on October 24.
Over 400 public nominations were received for businesses and individuals from Black, Asian, and ethnic minority backgrounds working within the UK hospitality industry.
The judging panel was co-chaired by TV presenter and celebrity chef Andi Oliver and co-founder of D&D London, Des Gunewardena. Judges included MasterChef winner and restaurateur, Shelina Permalloo.
