Kendal Town take break from league action

Kendal Town take a break from League action on Saturday when they travel to Atherton LR in the first round of the Macron League Cup.

Atherton are third bottom of North West Counties First Division North, currently in the third relegation position.

However the club has just announced that Chris Baguley has been appointed the new LR first team manager following the departure of Nick Matthews.

The former FC United and Ashton United player joins LR having been manager at AFC Monton last season when the club won the Murray Trophy in the Manchester League.

Chris is joined by his two brothers Jamie and Mark who will form his management team providing a large knowledge base and experience of the non-league scene.

The new manager said: “It’s an exciting opportunity for me to hopefully drive the club forward, which I think it deserves. Some of the squad is new to me but we are going to work hard, start with the basics and pick up results along the way.

“I have my own lads coming on board with me who I have worked with before. I am really pleased and looking forward to the challenge now.”

Kendal will travel on the back of a morale-boosting 4-2 home win over Ashton Athletic last night.

Manager Jimmy Marshall said: “We weren’t at our best but we did what we had to do and win the game. We got off to a slow start and conceded but responded well to lead 3-1 at the break.

“It was a change of shape as we went with a 4-4-2 formation because we thought that’s how tactically we could hurt them.

“In the period after half-time we created a number of chances and any of which put away would have settled the outcome.

“But we let them back into it and looked a bit edgy until Ryan (Winder) produced a gem of a cross and Killer (Tom Kilifin) does what he does best by putting his head on it to score.”

Saturday’s trip to Atherton is actually the first of three successive Cup matches – Atherton LT (Macron Cup away),  Tuesday, Oct 18 – Keswick (Westmorland County Cup home) and Saturday, Oct 22 – Longridge Town (FA Vase, home).
