Lizzie Quinlan has taken out a dual-purpose licence to train from the family’s stable near Appleby.
The 35-year-old is taking over from her mother Barbara Butterworth who had been operating with a permit.
Lizzie, the wife of jockey Sean Quinlan, has a dozen horses ready to run and two have already been in action.
Her two runners so far have both been at Carlisle where Getaway Luv was fifth of seven on October 13 while Benito finished second last Thursday under champion jockey Brian Hughes.
The stables next runner will be at Wetherby on Friday when the six-year-old Ange Endormi contests the 1.10pm, a novices handicap hurdle. Husband Sean takes the ride.
The Racing Post says that the training changeover follows heavy investment in the family’s Bolton Mill stable and Lizzie was active at the sales in preparation for the handover.
She told the Racing Post: “Mum and dad have done a lot for us and there’s been big changes at the yard.
“Sean’s not going to be able to ride for another 20 years, hopefully he’ll ride for another four or five, and we’ll have more of a jumps focus, but hopefully we’ll have some dual-purpose horses as well.”
The family farm is situated in the village of Bolton near Appleby and there has been plenty of building work going on to bring the facilities up to date.
“We’ve put in a new round circular gallop, arena and schooling facilities and we’re also going to put up another barn with another 14 boxes. We’ve got 20 horses at home with the youngsters, with 12 in at the moment.”
Barbara Butterworth was a former amateur rider from the North East who had sent out runners from the stable for more than 30 years.
She had been assisted by her daughter, who also rode as an amateur before breaking her back in a schooling fall.
