Unlicensed scrap dealers have been targeted in Carlisle following several complaints.
The operation was carried out by Carlisle Local Focus Hub, managed by Carlisle City Council.
The Local Focus hub brings together statutory, secondary and voluntary partners working together to tackle numerous issues raised by our communities.
A number of complaints have been received about unlicensed scrap dealers collecting scrap from locations across the Carlisle area.
Carlisle City Council’s licensing team, Cumbria police and officers from Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency checked vehicles to make sure occupants had the required licence to collect scrap metal and to check the roadworthiness of vehicles being used to collect scrap.
Several vehicles were stopped, and one collector was found to be unlicensed. Further action will be taken, the hub said. Another collector was found to be breaching his licence conditions. One vehicle was found to be dangerously overweight and instructed to reduce the weight before being allowed to continue. Cumbria police also issued traffic offence notices to motorists with vehicle defects.
Carlisle’s local focus manager, Chris Blain, said: “We deal with a number of referrals from our partners related to unlicensed collection of scrap and from residents reporting vehicles trespassing late at night claiming to be looking for scrap metal. I would like to reassure our communities that this joint work will continue throughout the year, and I would urge the public to report any vehicles of concern.”
The City Council’s licensing department manage scrap collectors licences and would urge collectors to contact the council to ensure they are appropriately licensed.
