Whitehaven were 4-0 winners against visiting Wyre Villa in the second round of the West Lancashire League’s Richardson Cup.
Both teams were pleased to get in a game on grass instead of artificial turf after a big effort from Whitehaven groundsman Tyler Brown working late on Friday.
Whitehaven had the game won by half-time as they raced into a four-goal lead.
The opener came on seven minutes from Kian Goulding who cut in from the left and curled the ball into the top corner.
Six minutes later the home side doubled the lead. Some quick thinking by goalkeeper Tom Fowler created it, After claiming a corner he pinged a pass to Carl Denver that Ederson would have been proud of.
Denver brought it down with a sublime touch, scotched round the defender and then produced the perfect cross for Owen Woodburn to finish on the half volley.
The third came on 27 minutes when Lewis Tidy met a Tom Powell corner powerfully with his head. It came down off the underside of the bar and ended up in the back of the net.
Seven minutes later Whitehaven scored a fourth. Some good approach play ended with Woodburn on the edge of the box and he did well to get it out of his feet and bend it brilliantly into the top corner,
There were no further goals in the second half and a young, fit Wyre side made a fight of it although their keeper made a couple of fine saves to keep it at four.
