On a crisp, clear December day at Frenchfield, with wisps of early morning mist hanging low over the River Eamont, 163 runners, walkers and joggers braved the cold to take part in the 379th Penrith parkrun.
It never ceases to amaze that this is an event where people of all shapes, sizes and ages can participate together in such a welcoming atmosphere. Today the ages ranged from the under-10s to the over-70s.
It was a special day for two Eden Runners, Anne Blues and James Grinbergs. Anne, completing her 200th parkrun, finished in 32 minutes 53, her best time of 2022 – she was thrilled with that, and fellow runners were equally delighted to share in the homemade cakes she’d brought to celebrate the occasion.
Anne did her first parkrun in 2014 and has run at places as far apart as Florence and Inverness. Asked why she does the parkrun she says it’s for the enjoyment, the atmosphere and the encouragement she receives from fellow participants.
James finished the run in 7th place with a time of 19 minutes 03, only five seconds off his best time of the year. He started running after retiring from football in 2014.
Parkrun number one was where parkruns all began, way down south at Bushy Park, London. Since then, most have been at Penrith though he has been a visitor to others including the notoriously hilly one at Whinlatter. It’s very much a family affair for James; his wife Kerry is a keen runner as are his sisters Helen and Susan.
Asked why he enjoys running so much James says he’s always loved being on his feet actively doing something and he enjoys the competition of running races. He gave a special mention to his dad who has always encouraged him and been a great motivator.
As ever a special mention must go to the marshals, the two pacers and all the volunteers who turn up in all weathers to ensure the event goes as smoothly as possible.
Penrith parkrun happens 9am every Saturday morning at Frenchfield. If you are interested in becoming involved either as a runner or volunteer then please contact our website www.parkrun.org.uk/penrith, our Facebook page or by emailing [email protected]
