Workington’s United Club produced a massive result in L&L Property Contractors Snooker League with a 3-2 victory at Workington Conservative Club.
It ended a remarkable run that took the current Division One champions back to March 2019.
Opening up, Dave Chapman delivered a fine win in a high scoring contest for a 1-0 United Club lead but with an equally dogged performance Richard McCarthy levelled with a victory in frame two.
Frame three saw a battle of the giants end in a one-sided win for Peter O’Hagan and with team mate Mark Suitor winning on the black in the next a monumental 3-1 United Club lead was gained.
The final frame, however, demonstrated that Cons were willing to fight for every points as Dave Holland recorded a victory to end the match with some consolation. The United Club sit fourth in Division One on 17 points with Cons second on 23 points.
Facing their B team Workington Golf Club A were in no mood for taking it easy as a 4-1 win for the Division One outfit demonstrated their ruthless side to move to the top of the table.
A victory for Bryan Walker put the A side 1-0 up before the B team’s Ryan Pearson produced a really solid performance to bring the Division Two outfit back in to it at 1-1.
Mark Brasted made sure the A team moved ahead again in a relatively low scoring encounter for 2-1 and as Phil Sorfleet won in similar fashion in frame four the match victory was assured at 3-1.
The final frame was the A teams’ chance to extend their winning margin and with the most comprehensive victory of the night Mark Cowen topped off a 4-1 victory in fine style. The Golf Club A top Division One on 25 points and the B team prop up Division Two on just 5 points.
Workington’s Veterans Club kept their recent run of form going as the Division One outfit defeated Division Two leaders Flimby Social 4-1 away.
A first frame win for Shane Evitts gave the Flimby side an early advantage but this was soon wiped out as Vets won the next two with Mark Tunstall starring.
Looking second favourite as Kevin Kirkham made a break of 30 in frame four, Vets captain Kevin Basnett dug in to record a black ball victory for a 3-1 match lead.
The final frame produced an early advantage for Vets’ Steve Garroway but with his opponent slowly coming back into the game a cool head was required. Up for the challenge it was the Vets cueist who rapidly went through the gears, and with some brilliant potting Garroway enhanced the match victory with aplomb and the fixture ended 4-1.
Finally, Maryport Social closed the gap between third and fourth in the Division Two table with a 4-1 home victory over the higher placed Rack Shack.
Even though Stephen Harrison gave the Whitehaven’s Rack Shack the perfect start with a win in the first, Greg Todd soon levelled the match for Maryport as he took the second.
The key to the match seemed to come in frame three as Gary Miller won on the black against last week’s Division Two leading player, Whitehaven’s Peter McAvoy.
Suitably inspired by Miller’s win team mate Andrew Scott restricted his opponent to just two points for 3-1 and as Ben Scott took the last with some confident potting a Social 4-1 victory was complete.
The Rack Shack sit third in Division Two on 12 points with Maryport one place below on 10 points.
