A swan stuck in ice on a South Cumbrian pond is now in the care of a bird sanctuary.
A passer-by spotted the swan struggling on a pond near Southend Caravan Park on Walney and sent out an SOS on social media.
Bardsea Bird Sanctuary was made aware and tried to get in contact with the RSPCA, but was put on hold. A call to the emergency services resulted in the sanctuary being told that they did not have a report from the RSPCA.
The sanctuary said: “Don’t ever attempt to rescue birds on ice – we’re just making you aware of how these poor birds are suffering and how hard it is to get them help.”
However, the sanctuary said that the bird was eventually rescued – and thanked Cath McTigue of the Tweet Fleet. The swan is now being looked after by the organisation.
