The sudden death of a young rugby star has rocked West Cumbria – but Logan Holgate was a talented football player too.

Eighteen-year-old Logan died on Wednesday. He played for Cleator Moor Celtic Under-18s where he was a very popular member of the squad. And this weekend, the club will be paying its respects to him at its matches.

Club chairman Graeme Close said: “The club will be paying it’s respects to Logan at the games this weekend, involving the first and second teams. The Under-18s are going ahead with their game on Sunday after speaking with the family and will also pay their respects.

“He was predominantly known for his exploits on the rugby field where he had represented England, but he was also a very good footballer.

“He played everywhere really but liked to score goals and he used to joke that he was Celtic’s new Haaland. He could always be seen at training or around the club with a smile on his face.

“When the news broke everyone at the club was devastated. It’s another case of a young man being taken far too early.

“Cleator Moor Celtic send their deepest condolences to the family and to the Hensingham Rugby League Club where Logan was an outstanding young player.”

His elder brother Ellison, a star player at Wath Brow Hornets, also played previously with Celtic as did younger brother Fletcher, although he now plays his football at another local club.

An online fundraising page has been set up for Logan’s family. It has raised almost £23,000 in 24 hours. You can donate here: https://gofund.me/7834542e
