In the Workington Pool League the APH Travel Handicap knockout cup has reached the quarter final stage.
JJ’s A visited a resurgent Vets club in a race to ten frames over two legs
Dean Adams gave JJ’s the first frame but this was the only frame they achieved as the Vets ran riot with Frank Lucas kicking off an 8 frame winning streak to give them an 8-2 first leg advantage and one foot in the semi final.
B league’s Miners and Packhorse B Pooligans are enjoying their best run in the knock-out competition and being drawn against each other has given one of them a great chance to reach the semi finals.
Pooligans captain Jonsey levelled the tie at 2-2 but Ray Mitchell helped Miners take hold of the tie as they raced to a 5-2 lead.
The Pooligans rallied to take the final 2 double frames as Miners take a 5-4 advantage into the second leg.
The two leading teams in the A league kept up their form and look set for the semis. Harrington Legion, mounting a league and cup double challenge thanks to new acquisitions, faced a potential tough tie playing Packhorse A who are the only team to have defeated them this season.
Despite Legion enjoying an early lead, Packhorse’s Leigh Musgrave reduced the deficit to 3-2.
Legion composed themselves as Graham Scott earned Legion the last singles frame as they took the 1st leg 8-2 thanks to winning all their doubles.
Senhouse Street took a break from their title challenge as they visited B league table topping Lifeboat A.
It was Senhouse that dominated as Tom Thompson helped them take the first six frames.
Jeff Phillips kept Lifeboats hopes alive winning his singles and doubles but they’ll have to get early frames in the 2nd leg as they lost 7-4.
The APH Travel plate knockout saw contrasting team form with JJ’s B on a five game winning streak facing Station Road C on a five game losing streak so a JJ’s win seemed inevitable. However the form book went out the window.
Stephen Gibbon gave Station Rd C a 4-0 lead before Geoff Banton earned JJ’s their first frame of the evening. JJ’s rallied but will have to be on top form next week to turn around a 6-4 deficit.
Newly formed JJ’s C have given a good account of themselves in their maiden season and it was their captain Nathan Campbell who led by example in their 7-4 victory over Station Rd B.
With Grapes given a bye due to Lifeboat B unable to fulfil their fixture the final match saw the Cons club face Grapes A.
Dave Austin got the Cons off to a good start as a tight match ensued. The final frame had great importance as to how much of a lead the Cons would take in the second leg but Kenny Kirkwood and Luke Elliot held their nerve for the Grapes to win the final doubles and cut the deficit to 6-5.
