A Cumbrian animal charity has had a record year helping pets needing a new home.
Oak Tree Animals’ Charity, based near Carlisle, said its rehoming and community programmes in 2022 had helped 4,384 animals. This was an increase of over 1,000 in previous years, it added.
It costs over £3,200 a day to run the charity and is funded by donations.
Caroline Johnson, general manager, said: “It was a record year for Oak Tree. Through our supporters’ generosity we were able to help 4,384 animals in need throughout our region.
“Our team at Oak Tree provide a range of services in addition to rehoming, including temporary fostering for those who are homeless or fleeing domestic violence; behaviour and training sessions; pet foodbank help; and personalised animal welfare support. Where possible we aim to keep pets in loving homes for life.
“While this increase reflects the development of our support services and the dedication of our supporters, volunteers and team, it sadly reflects the increase in need within our community.
“The increased number of pets obtained throughout lockdown, combined with the significant financial pressures faced by families with the current cost of living crisis, means that more people than ever are facing difficult decisions and challenges when looking after their pet. This is where Oak Tree may be able to help.”
