A petition has been launched calling for post office services to be brought back to a Lake District village.
Hawkshead lost its Post Office when the postmaster resigned last year and now Westmorland & Lonsdale MP Tim Farron and Liberal Democrat councillors Suzanne Pender, Ian Wharton and Tracy Coward are calling for the services to be reinstated.
They said: “For years, the post office has been the only place where people can use banking services or withdraw cash and has been a key community hub in the middle of the village.
“The age profile of Hawkshead is older than national average, and 10 per cent of the community don’t have a car and public transport is very limited.
“A round trip on foot to the next nearest post office in Coniston would take well over two hours. The village is home to many businesses and so we are confident that a new home for post office services can be found.
