Work to resurface the A592 will overrun, council bosses said.
The roadworks, part of the Department for Transport’s Safer Road Project, will take ‘longer than anticipated’, according to Cumbria County Council, which has apologised for the delay.
Phase five started on Friday, January 27 and will last until Friday February 17, weather permitting. It will be completed in three sections: Section 1: Dacre junction to Waterfoot junction; Section 2: Rheged end to Dalemain junction and Section 3: Dalemain to Dacre junction.
During this period, the road will be closed with work taking place between 8.30am and 4.30pm Monday to Friday. Outside of the working hours, access will be maintained where possible, but vehicles do so at their own risk.
A council spokesman said: “While we aim to complete our work each day by 4.30pm to allow the road to be accessible, it will be periodically affected as the work progress and depending on the type of activity.
“For example, the bond coating is applied hot by a tanker and takes roughly half an hour to set and cool down. It may be necessary to delay access at times, depending on the location of the work operations.”
There will be a full road closure and the diversion routes are as follows:
- NORTHBOUND – Travelling via the A5091 through Dockray and onto the A66
- SOUTHBOUND – Travelling via the A66 and onto the A5901 through Dockray before rejoining the A592
During the work, local businesses in Glenridding will be open as usual, but the authority is advising residents and visitors to plan their journeys ahead, as extra time may be needed to get to their destinations
Councillor Keith Little, Cumbria County Council cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “We would like to thank all the residents, businesses, visitors and commuters, who have been very patient and supportive during this work. Also, thanks to those who attended the drop-in sessions during the week, we have received some excellent suggestions and are progressing these.
“As we near completion on this section of the A592, it is great news that these improvements will prevent future deterioration, as well as make the road easier and safer for all users.
“Local businesses in Glenridding are open, and we would like to encourage the public to support local businesses if they can.”
