Controversial plans for 150-space Lake District car park withdrawn at 11th hour

Landmark plans for a new 150-space car park in a popular corner of the Lake District have been withdrawn at the 11th hour.

The application by the Lingholm Private Trust, Portinscale, was pulled from a meeting of the Lake District National Park’s development control committee sitting in Kendal on Wednesday.

No reason was given for the late withdrawal, although LDNPA planning officers had recommended that the panel refuse the scheme.

Park members had gathered to make a crunch decision on the proposals for Ullock Moss and Cupboard Field on the popular western side of Derwentwater near Catbells and Portinscale.

It follows major issues in the area after the pandemic with problem parking and traffic congestion.

An early incarnation of the scheme, which had been recommended for approval, was narrowly refused in December 2021, as planning committee members rebelled against officer advice to turn it down.

A report before the latest meeting said there were 91 representations of support for the car park and 70 objections.
