A free exhibition celebrating the formation and achievements of Carlisle City Council is being staged in the city.
Carlisle Reflections opened today, Saturday March 4, and runs until Saturday, March 11 at The Old Town Hall.
It includes exhibition panels, audio of interviews with current and past staff and a selection of videos showcasing the city.
The exhibits have been collated by a ‘legacy’ working group made up of Carlisle City Council staff and includes interviews that recollect the times and changes at the council.
Leader of Carlisle City Council John Mallinson said: “Carlisle has a proud past which should be celebrated. The Carlisle Reflections exhibition draws together historical information, artefacts, video and audio presentations. All tell the story of the city and the work of Carlisle City Council over the past decades.
“As we move into a new era for local government, with the formation of Cumberland Council in April, this is an ideal opportunity to reflect and acknowledge the achievements of our city, communities and council. There will be lots to see, so please take time to make a visit.”
With the support of Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery, some items from their archives will be on display, including:
- Sir Benjamin Scott’s silver and enamelled Freedom of the City Casket from 1906.
- A Carlisle City Police Ballot Box from 1827.
- A presentation key marking the 1500th Council House modernised in Carlisle from 1973.
- The Mayor’s Collecting Tin – used to help raise funds for the William Pit Disaster 1947.
- Edmund Lund Trophy 1928.
- Carlisle Great Fair Biscuit Tin 1976.
- Miniature portrait of Prince Charles Edward Stuart 1749.
- Carlisle City Police Truncheon c 1835-1885.
The exhibition opening hours are between 10am and 4pm. There will also be free tours of the Civic Centre.
This is a unique opportunity to see inside the council chamber, mayoral office and see the sword and mace.
Numbers are limited and early booking is essential.
