Senior students from Carlisle’s Austin Friars School visited St Bees School to take part in a sport exchange.
St Bees lead PE teacher Brad Simpson, organised the event with the help of the independent school. Brad said: “I was incredibly happy when Friars agreed to take part in the event.
“We’re looking to constantly improve our sporting talents, so to be able to bring our teams up against theirs is a great opportunity for the whole school, but especially the students who took part.
“St Bees School was once known for its rugby and cricket teams and the hope is that one day that will be the truth again – along with a mix of other sports from all over the world.”

The opposing teams played football, volleyball, basketball, netball, and squash.
Results
- Football: Friars 4-3 St Bees
- Basketball: St Bees 27-13 Friars
- Volleyball: St Bees 2-0 Friars
- Netball: Friars 16-6 St Bees

After a heated afternoon and some very close scores, Austin Friars managed to steal this year’s victory when it all came down to the last game of squash.

St Bees headmaster Robin Silk said: “The sport exchange with Friars has been a marvellous afternoon! It’s really given our students the chance to showcase their talents against some really tough teams, all the students involved – whether that be playing, spectating, refereeing, or helping, have represented our school wonderfully and we could not be prouder of them all.
“Hopefully this event can continue annually and next year, who knows, perhaps St Bees will bring the win home!”
