Workington Reds Ladies have added some invaluable experience to their squad just before this season’s player signings window was closed down.
Ex-Fleetwood Town Wrens defender, Steph Holden, has joined the club and has started training with the squad.
Having previously played football in the park with her mates, Steph’s first taste of competitive football came while at university.
She then joined Blackpool Wren Rovers and in 2013 was part of a highly successful team that won the North West Women’s Division North league title, the North West Women’s League Cup as well as beating a semi pro Blackburn Rovers Ladies side in the Lancashire Cup final.
Having moved up to the area to develop her career as a firefighter, Steph decided to take some time out of the game and focus on adjusting to life in West Cumbria.
On her signing for the Reds, Steph said: “I’d been looking to dig my boots back out and get back playing since the start of the season and my wife had encouraged me to do so. The final push came after speaking with a work colleague who’s daughter; Sophie Douglas, plays for the club.
“Anthony spoke highly of the Reds and offered to put my name forward. I’ve trained with the squad twice and I’m really keen to sharpen up on my fitness and contribute to the team’s performances when I’m ready and get the nod.”
Manager Paul Mackenzie said: “It’s fair to say it was a bit of a leap of faith for both Steph and the club. We knew very little about Steph and her of us.
“I’m pleased to say she has made a positive impact on us straight away. It’s clear she is a ‘front foot’ type of player and does not lack physicality. Her experience of playing in the league above ours will be a great asset for us.”
The Ladies sit precariously in ninth position in the league as they enter their last five games in what has been a tough season.
A lengthy long-term injury list, players unavailable through personal circumstances, additional injuries and a gruelling spell of 12 away games and one at home in the last 13 has taken its toll on squad.
The squad will make their last journey in this year’s campaign when they travel to an inform Preston North End Women FC this Sunday.
Their remaining four games will see them at home against Carlisle United Ladies FC, Blackpool FC Girls and Ladies, Penrith AFC Ladies and finally Bolton Wanderers Girls FC Women with all games being played at Derwent Park.
“Support from the terraces would be greatly received and could be critical in the team’s aim to finish the season as strongly as possible,” said Mackenzie.
