Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team is throwing open its doors this week to show people around its base near Gosforth.
It was officially opened by Jos Naylor in 2018 but due to COVID, a planned open day had to be put on hold.
Now – over 500 callouts later – on Saturday, April 22 between 10am and 4pm, people can visit for the first time.
A spokesman said: “Now we are well established, we are ready to host a special open day so that our community, families and friends along with any of our supporters and visitors to the area can see what we do when that cry for help hits our phones.
“There will be plenty of team members there to show you round the vehicles and equipment we use. Team members will be happy to answer all those questions that you have always wanted to ask.
“We will also welcome those who are interested in joining the team, to learn more about what we do and ask any questions they may have.”
Representatives from the Mountain Weather Information Service (MWIS) will be there with information on how to plan your day in the fells.
West Cumberland Orienteering Club have provided a course and members will teach some navigating skills.
The spokesman added: “We can show you round base and explain how a call out works, see our vehicles, and there’ll be activities for the kids. We’ll also have snacks, drinks and merchandising so bring cash and of course donations are very welcomed.
“Weather permitting we will be flying the two team drones which are a recent acquisition to help locate and rescue casualties in the mountains. We will also be
have our search dog Jess and handler Penny to talk about the use and training of search dogs and maybe do some demonstrations to keep the kids amused.
“At noon there will be Rust to Rome challenge vehicle arriving from Carlisle that will be raising money for all the Lake District teams. We look forward to welcoming you, so drop in anytime throughout the day!”
The base is at CA20 1BS, just off the A595 about a mile north from the village of Gosforth. There is some limited car parking around the base but there is extra overflow parking at the Red Admiral 200m from the base on the A595.
