The Kong Adventure Climbing Centre in Keswick has reopened following a major emergency on Saturday.

A spokesman at the centre said that the incident involved a member of the public who became became stuck in its caving experience attraction.

They said: “Staff tried to help the man and followed all emergency procedures but it became apparent that outside assistance was needed.”

Emergency services were called at around 2pm.

Fire crew, mountain rescue, cave rescue, paramedics and Kong staff then worked together to extricate the casualty who was then taken to the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle, for further treatment.

A spokesman for Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service said: “This rescue incident was a multi-agency operation involving six crews from Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service (Keswick, Penrith, Maryport, Workington and Windermere and the Joint Incident Command Unit), Mountain Rescue, Cave Rescue, North West Ambulance Service/HART, Great North Air Ambulance Service and Cumbria police.”

It took six fire crews five hours to release the person. It is understood that the casualty had hyperextension joints, which led them getting into difficulty.

Police closed Heads Road in Keswick while dealing with the incident.
