An inquest has opened into the death of a father-of-three, who had to be rescued from a Lake District adventure centre.

Carl O’Keeffe, 49, was at Kong Adventure Centre in Keswick for a children’s birthday party on April 22.

He fell and became trapped in the Lakes Road venue’s caving experience and had to be rescued by emergency services in a five-hour operation.

Police, six fire crews, Keswick Mountain Rescue Team, Cumbria Ore Mines Rescue Unit, Hazardous Area Response Team and Great North Air Ambulance all attended.

He was taken to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle, where his family said he was fighting for his life.

Mr O’Keeffe, of Lancaster, died on Sunday, April 30, at 3pm, as a result of his injuries, with his family around his bedside.

The inquest was opened and adjourned.
