More than 50 horse racing fans and charity supporters were all a-flutter as they helped raise over £1,000 for a north Cumbria charity.
A special charity horse race night was held at Mungrisdale Village Hall on Saturday 20 May for the Northern Fells Group (NFG).
The event was attended by over 50 punters who placed ‘bets’ and collected winnings from four special ‘bookies.’
The event was hosted by Margaret and Andy Rose.
Andy, treasurer for the NFG, said: “Everyone fully entered into the spirit of the event and had a thoroughly enjoyable time. The excitement from the first race onwards was quite special.”
“Thanks must go to our four extraordinary bookies Annette Nicholson, Martin Nicholson, Philippa Groves and Wendy Cowen.
“The event was compered by Chris Eakin who gave what can only be described as a stellar performance. Thanks too to Bevan Thomson and Frances Lee for manning the bar and raffle.
“With the generous support of everyone present and that of our race sponsors we managed to raise £1,250 for the Northern Fells Group. This is truly a magnificent amount and far more than we dared hope for!” said Andy.
The NFG serves 3,700 residents spread over 200 square miles of rural and remote areas of the north of the county.
The charity plays a vital role in maintaining community life in a sparsely populated region of the county where many live in isolated areas.
