A new festival combining folk music and some of the best in local food and drink will be held in Kendal later this month.

Kendal Folk & Food Festival will take place in Market Place and Finkle Street on Saturday June 17, from 10am to 5pm.

“There used to be a food festival in Kendal so we wanted to reintroduce that concept and promote local food and drink as well as folk music as the two go so well together,” said Peter Brendling, the manager of Kendal BID, which is organising the event.

“We hope the festival will highlight Kendal as a destination, showcase the fabulous food, drink and entertainment on offer here and that it will give an economic boost to the town and its businesses.”

There will be a variety of stalls serving different types of food, including meat, cheese and cakes.

Those running stalls will include Boom Burger, Kendal Farmers’ Market, Pappy’s Texas BBQ, Sweet Treats and Bay Distillery.

Among the folk artists appearing in Market Place and Finkle Street will be The Mizzen Crew, Coldharbour Road, Chloe Jane Hirst, The Lakeland Fiddlers, The Duke of Cumberland Folk Group, The Fabulous Bryce Street Strummers and FolkintheFells.

The festival will also extend to Pappy’s, in The Old Smokehouse in Yard 2, Stricklandgate, where music will be performed on Saturday from noon until 2pm and on Sunday (June 18) from noon until 3pm and The Factory Tap on Aynam Road, where there will be a hog roast and Malay cuisine.

“It promises to be a great day, combining music and food, which we hope will appeal to both local residents and attract people from out of the area to visit the town,” said Peter.

Kendal BID, a not-for-profit organisation, was established in 2014 and is now in its second five-year period of operation.

Its wide range of activities include marketing Kendal as a destination for visitors, running projects and providing benefits to businesses and the public that use them.

Kendal BID funds the dscvr Kendal app, which highlights shops, food and drink establishments, businesses, attractions and varied things to do in the town.

It can also award shop front grants to help businesses decorate or generally improve their frontages.
