Exciting plans to help Cleator Moor and its communities to thrive for generations will be on show at a drop-in event next week.

Anyone can attend the sessions to see the latest plans on Cleator Moor Town Deal and each of its four ambitious projects designed to transform the health, wealth and opportunities of the area.

The informal event will take place on Tuesday, June 27 at Cleator Moor Civic Hall, The Square, between 3pm and 7.30pm.

Members of the project teams will be on hand to discuss the proposals and answer any questions people have.

Bob Metcalfe, chair of the Cleator Moor Town Deal Board, urged people to attend to see how the projects have progressed.

He said: “Work has been ongoing behind the scenes to further develop each of these four schemes. I’m looking forward to welcoming people to the event so that they can see for themselves the latest designs and chat to those involved in getting them to this crucial stage.”

Working with Copeland Borough Council, the Cleator Moor Town Deal Board secured £40.9 million in funding in November last year – with £22.5m coming from the Government’s Towns Fund and a further £18.4m from match funders.

Now, alongside the newly formed Cumberland Council, work is underway to ready each of the projects for completion before March 2026.

The four projects that make up the Cleator Moor Town deal are:

  • Enterprising Town – The creation of an Enterprise Hub at Leconfield Industrial Estate to provide employment and training opportunities for residents in Cleator Moor as well as helping to diversify the local economy. The wider estate would see existing buildings being refurbished, landscaping and improved biodiversity.
  • Healthy Town – This project will create a modern, multi-purpose and inclusive activity centre to help people of all ages and abilities to access sport and exercise to improve their health and wellbeing. People will be encouraged to visit Cleator Moor, boosting the local economy.
  • Connected Town – Making better connections between residential areas, commercial zones and the town centre are at the heart of this plan, including ways to make walking and cycling safer and more accessible for everyone.
  • Revitalised Town – This project aims to provide modern work spaces within underused town centre buildings and to improve perceptions of Cleator Moor overall to enhance skills and employment opportunities for local people.

Mark Fryer, leader of Cumberland Council, said: “The Town Deal represents a significant programme of regeneration for Cleator Moor and its communities and it is great to see it moving forward.

“Each project has the potential to transform the lives of local people, whether that’s through better access to sports facilities, new jobs or training opportunities.

“Please do come along to the drop-in event to find out more.”
