A woman scrambling in the Lake District had to be airlifted to hospital after she fell 9ft down a gully.

Keswick Mountain Rescue Team has just released details of the incident, which happened on Saturday, at Lorton Gully, Grasmore.

The initial call went to Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team, due to the location, but members were hosting an open day for its 70th anniversary so had requested additional cover from Keswick.

Both teams made their way to the incident and Cockermouth team members located and assessed the woman.

The woman was given initial treatment but due to the technical ground and the nature of the woman’s injuries a Coastguard helicopter was requested to winch the casualty off the hill.

Meanwhile the Keswick team brought a stretcher and additional equipment to the site so that the woman could be carefully transferred to a safe place for winching.

She was placed in a vacuum mattress and onto a stretcher before being moved to open ground. The Coastguard then winched her into the helicopter for a speedy transfer to hospital.

A Keswick Mountain Rescue Team spokesman said: “The Keswick team send their congratulations to Cockermouth MRT on their 70th anniversary. We’re glad we could support them on their special day.”
