Matthew Wear was paying his first visit to Northside on Saturday after joining the ranks of appointed referees.
He had been a speedway follower for many years, since starting going to grasstrack racing with his grandparents, and regularly travelled the country to watch the sport at various levels.
Having passed his final exam last season he has had eight meetings in an official capacity as a referee at Championship and National Development League level.
He also had to make a decision on a rare rulebook error which a good number of fans at the match between Workington Comets and the Oxford Chargers will not have seen before.
