Workington Reds start their pre-season training tomorrow with a full day session for first team and development squads.
Manager Danny Grainger is looking forward to getting started in the build-up to the new challenge of the NPL Premier Division.
Both new full-backs Adie Roxburgh and Finlay Wallbank will be in attendance along with a clutch of trialists.
Grainger said: “We have six trialists coming along to the first session who we want to have a look at it in training and then in the pre-season friendlies.
“I had hoped to have a third signing wrapped up before the training session but unfortunately he has chosen to go elsewhere, which was a disappointment.
“However, I am very happy with the squad I have to work with and I will be looking to top it up with a loan signing once the clubs at a higher level have settled in and see how might be available to go out.
“I think if I can bring in a right sided forward and another central midfield player I will be more than happy with what we have to start the season.”
The first task on Saturday will be to assess all the players – senior and development – for their fitness levels, ahead of the morning and afternoon sessions.
The first friendly is on Thursday against Whitehaven in the annual Shaun Hocking Memorial Trophy game when Grainger plans to play two different teams in each half.
That’s the first of nine friendlies lined-up by the Reds ahead of the start of the 2023/24 NPL programme. The league fixtures are expected to be released early in July.
The games are:
- July 6 – Whitehaven (a)
- July 8 – Dumbarton (h)
- July 11 – Morecambe (h)
- July 15 – Carlisle Utd (h)
- July 18 – Carlisle City (a)
- July 22 – Whitley Bay (a)
- July 25 – Penrith (h)
- July 29 – Ashington (a)
- August 5 – Dunston (a)
The league season is due to start on August 12.
