Workington Reds’ Budget Booster scheme for June proved a massive boost with over £21,000 raised by pledges and donations.
The booster was created as a short, high impact fundraiser to enable manager Danny Grainger to hopefully strengthen the squad further before the season officially starts on August 12.
In total, the booster raised £21,790 which was described by Grainger as an incredible amount and was made up from 94 individual pledges.
Vice chairman Richard Lewthwaite administered the scheme and he said: “It proved a massive success and the club would like to place on record it’s sincere thanks to all who have taken part.
“As we said at the start, modern non-league clubs need fans to engage with squad-building initiatives in order for them to progress and true to form Reds fans have stepped up.
“Let’s look forward to August 12 and another season of progress on and off the field.”
Building up to that NPL Premier Division kick off, Reds players go into their second training session at Penrith tonight.
Grainger announced himself well satisfied with Saturday’s opening session attended by 47 players – made up of senior players, trialists and the development squad.
“I’m happy with the condition of the boys on their return. The test results have improved and everyone has obviously looked after themselves over the summer break.
“We were able to get in two really good sessions into the lads in preparation for the games which start soon,” he said.
Reds play their first friendly at Whitehaven on Thursday night when they contest the annual game for the Shaun Hocking Memorial Trophy.
