A child who became stuck in the sea off the west coast was rescued by a family member.
Emergency services were called on Friday, July 28, at around 1.30pm to Parton, near Whitehaven.
Workington RNLI’s two lifeboats, Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team, St Bees RNLI, Cumbria police and the North West Ambulance Trust attended.
En route, information was received that a family member was also in the water in an attempt to make a rescue of the child, who was between 20m and 30m off shore.
Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team said: “The team arrived ready to conduct an immediate snatch rescue, but thankfully found that both persons were now just out of the water and safe and well. After initial medical assessment by coastguards and police, they were handed over to the ambulance service.”
Workington RNLI’s boats returned to the station at around 2.20pm.
Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team and St Bees RNLI were immediately called to car which had been abandoned on the cliffs at Barrowmouth Common, above Saltom Bay.
They joined police at the location as safety cover and in case a rope rescue was needed.
The rescue team said: “With police on the cliffs and the occupants unaccounted for, there was concern the occupants could possibly be in danger on the cliffs, our rope rescue team were requested to attend as safety cover for all concerned and effect a rescue should the need arise.
“St Bees RNLI were also in attendance to offer support.
“With the incident concluded and satisfied there was no one on the cliffs, so no need for rope or water safety, we were released and stood down.”
