The opening week of the Carlisle and District Billiards League saw some big wins in the First Division.

In the featured match Longtown visited last season’s bronze medalists Qzone in what was expected to be a close encounter.

Andy Story got the visitors off to a great start, defeating snooker’s 100 per cent man Giles Finneghan 100-53.

Dave Murray extended Longtown’s lead with a 100-84 victory over Chris Forrester, and David Steele sealed the team win and bonus points, winning 100 to 67.

Martyn Gowing pulled a game back for the home side, beating Ian Steele 100-44, before Longtown sealed the final frame in the battle of the number one’s with Tony Steele impressively beating Ian Pattinson 100-49.

Other scores: Buffs A 0, Inter Qzone 7; Annan 6, Denton Holme 0; Rock 5, Southend A 1

There was a high-quality start in the Second Division Southend derby, with lots of great shots and clever breaks.

Tim Ward got the better of Ste Swailes with breaks of 27 and 24 helping him to an 80-33 win.

Raymond Swailes equalized for Southend C, with breaks of 25 and 22 leading to a 80-48 victory.

Dene O’Neill got the away team’s nose in front with an 80-54 victory, before Harry Ruddick equalized for Southend with an 82-71 victory.

In the deciding frame, League Hall of Famer Stuart Telford beat the C team’s Stewart Roberts 80-67 to seal a 4-2 win for the Southend.
