Cumbrian construction firm celebrates 30 years in business

A leading Cumbrian construction firm is celebrating its 30th anniversary.

DSD Construction, which specialises in highways and associated civils infrastructure, was set up in 1993 by Dennis Nugent and his sons Shaun and Darren.

Initially, with only a handful of staff, the company supported small surfacing contracts for Carlisle City Council and Cumbria County Council.

Today, the firm’s 150 staff deliver surfacing, civils and construction work across the highways, rail, and nuclear sectors. Substantial growth in nuclear project delivery at Sellafield now forms a key part of its business portfolio.

It is based as Kingmoor Park in Carlisle and over the last 10 years, DSD Construction has grown its civil engineering and nuclear divisions and turnover has multiplied to around £30 million today.

The company plans to build up its already healthy order book to deliver work of around £50 million a year. It wants to create a new operating centre on the M8 corridor to serve the Scottish central belt and to complement existing operations in Carlisle, Whitehaven, Sellafield, and Harrogate, creating new jobs.

It also wants to increase its supply chain from its existing 200-plus sub-contractors.

Operations director Martin Tweddle said: “An integral part of DSD’s success stems from our staff where retention is of the highest order, with numerous employees having supported the business over decades. Investment in our people remains a key pillar for growth where personal development is encouraged and commensurate progression is supported.”

Shaun Nugent, managing director of DSD, said: ““We are incredibly proud to celebrate thirty years of excellence in the construction industry. Our success is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and talent of our team, as well as the trust and support of our clients.

“We look forward to continuing to deliver exceptional construction solutions and playing a vital role in shaping the future of our communities.”
