Workington Comets reserve Harry McGurk has decided to sit out the rest of the 2023 season.
Starting the season for the Comets with a 7.11 average, it has since dropped to 3 points as he hasn’t hit the heights that was expected this year.
He himself agrees it has been a tough season and undoubtedly this is a tough decision to make at this stage of his career.
However he feels it is the right choice at this moment as he regains his confidence and love for the sport, and everyone at Workington speedway is backing him to do that at some point.
Comets team boss James Denham said: “I feel for Harry as it just hasn’t happened for him this year. But he’ll be back. He has been professional throughout the season even when things haven’t gone his or the team’s way.
“His determination to overcome his drop in form has been clear to see and that’s just testament to the type of lad he is. It’s just a shame we haven’t seen the best of Harry this year.
“On behalf of the promotion and fans at Workington speedway, I would just like to wish Harry all the best and thank him for being a part of our new era.”
Harry has praised the support of the Comets fans and promotion in a statement in which he said: “I’m sorry to all the fans for my performances all year, I came in on a 7.00 average and have dropped to below half of that and not lived up to my performances of last year.
“Unfortunately, I have decided to sit out the last few meetings of this year before I cause damage to myself or anyone else.
“Thank you to all the fans for the unbelievable support, home and away. I’ve never felt anything like it in the NDL before, you are a credit to the club.”
