A popular Carlisle pub has had to call last orders due to the cost of living crisis.
The Howard Arms, on Lowther Street, announced the closure on social media and explained the reasons behind the decision.
Owners Dianne and Iain said: “It has been a tough four years for every pub in the country. With the impact of COVID-19 restrictions immediately followed by the cost of living crisis for our customers. Ever-rising energy and hospitality costs and widespread staff shortages.
“Unfortunately, The Howard has suffered from the additional impact of the closure of many of our retail and office-based neighbours, compounded by access through the Lanes shopping centre being closed at night, effectively distancing us from the rest of the town centre.”
The pair added that they will now focus on their other two Carlisle pubs instead, The Crown Inn, in Stanwix and the Milbourne Arms.
They said: “We are proud of our achievements since we moved into the Howard in August 2019. With a customer feedback rating of 4.5 and a Travellers Choice award, we have consistently been listed as Tripadvisor’s number one pub in Carlisle for 18 months now and also ranked within their top 12 per cent of restaurants in Carlisle.
“While we will be sorry to leave the Howard, we do so with many happy memories and we are looking forward to providing an even better customer experience at the Crown and the Milbourne, both of which are doing well in the current environment.”
Staff working at the Howard are being transferred to the duo’s two other pubs, allowing them to extend opening hours.
They added: “Our brilliant chef Sara Westbrook, will be serving up her famous homemade pies and other Howard classics, so please come visit her there.
“Thanks again for your support over the last four years and we hope to see you for many more to come, just in a different place.”
