
Eddie Martin, the former leader of Cumbria County Council, has died.
Councillor Hilary Carrick, leader of the Conservative group on Westmorland and Furness Council, led the tributes.
She said: “I was deeply saddened to hear the news of Eddie Martin’s death.
“Eddie was an amazing orator, a prolific letter writer and an inspirational leader of Cumbria County Council.
“He was always impatient to bring about improvements that would benefit the residents of Cumbria and he will be fondly remembered by everyone who worked with him.
“Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.”
Mike Johnson, leader of the Conservative Group on Cumberland Council, said he was saddened to hear of Mr Martin’s death.
He said: “Eddie was a councillor who will be remembered by those he worked with for his kindness and compassion.
“He worked tirelessly to ensure the residents of Cumbria received the best possible service from members and officers alike.
“Our sincere condolences are sent to his family and friends and this sad time.”
