
Promoted Flimby Social were in imperious form in the latest round of L&L Property Contractors Snooker League matches.
They whitewashed top tier champions Workington Golf Club A 5-0 in what can only be described as a remarkable home win.
A victory in the first from Flimby’s Michael ‘Sid’ Walker gave last season’s Division Two champions the ideal start and an impressive win for Sal Cakmak in the second soon made it 2-0.
Richard Kirkham asserted his style of play in the third to advance the score to 3-0 and with Flimby captain Geoff Banton winning on the colours in the fourth the underdogs now led 4-0.
The last frame couldn’t have presented anything tougher for the Division One champions as Flimby’s Kevin Kirkham was next to the table.
In a game that produced the most convincing victory of the night it was the former county singles champion who wrapped up the match in devastating style to complete the sensational whitewash.
Fellow promotees Station Road Club delivered a result only eclipsed by Flimby as they defeated multiple Division One champions, Workington Conservative Club, 3-2 in an excellent home performance.
A break of 46 by Richard McCarthy was enough to put the Cons outfit 1-0 up but with Darren Lawson continuing his excellent form he took care of frame two to deliver parity at 1-1.
A quite brilliant victory in the next from Chris Hunter put Station Road Club in the lead at 2-1 however a frame winning break of 34 by Cons Dave Holland ensured the match went to a decider.
In the final frame a finely balanced game eventually tipped in Station Road’s favour and in taking the balls he required Mark Robertson delivered a satisfying match win.
Workington’s United Club B added to the round’s theme as they rolled over another side from a higher division with a 3-2 defeat of their A team.
A Stephen Jackson first frame win was quickly negated by a Clive Lister victory in the second to tie the fixture at 1-1.
Nevertheless, as Dale Milton won on the black for a 2-1 United Club B side lead the lower divisional outfit claimed the advantage.
Another close victory, this time from United A’s Mark Suitor, took the game to a decider but it was Wayne Sinclair who produced the goods under pressure to seal the match victory to upset their club rivals.
The all-Division Two clash between Workington Veterans Club B and Maryport Social might not have presented itself with an opportunity to see yet another top tier side beaten, nevertheless the underdog dominance continued as Vets B ended up 3-2 winners.
Jack Basnett followed up his excellent win in the TKO a couple of weeks ago with a victory in the first to put Vets B 1-0 up.
Maryport’s Gary Miller soon tied the match score with a win in the second but it was Vets B who took the match lead again with a convincing win from Adam Hodgson in the third.
The Social side were up for the fight however as Andrew Scott took the fourth to force a decider, but it was Jordan Ferguson who tipped the balance in favour of the Vets B side again by pinching the last to record the underdogs first league win of the season.
Finally, Workington Vets Club A came back from 1-0 down away to Workington Golf Club B to record a 4-1 victory in the all-Division Two fixture.
Ellis Brasted improved as the first frame progressed and in slowly pulling away to victory he put the Golf B side 1-0 up.
A workman like performance in the second from Vets A captain Kevin Basnett produced match parity and with a break of 31 from team mate Mark Tunstall the away team were now 2-1 up.
Another Vets A win in the fourth soon made it 3-1 and with a self-assured showing in the final frame of the match Mark Tatton ensured the away side went home happy.
