The extraordinary work of mountain rescue teams in the Lake District have been highlighted in a new map.
Created by Hannah Wright, a technical relationship consultant at Ordnance Survey, it shows callouts attended by the volunteer teams in the national park between January 2019 and July 2023.
Mountain Rescue – Whatever the Weather shows that the teams attended 2,154 callouts in that time and highlights the hotspots in the Lake District for rescues.

An Ordnance Survey spokesman said: “It is designed to highlight the extraordinary work of the volunteer mountain rescue teams who are on call 24/7, 365 days of the year and go out to help, no questions asked, whatever the weather.”
There are 10 teams in the Lake District – Cockermouth, Coniston, Duddon & Furness, Kendal, Keswick, Kirkby Stephen, Langdale Ambleside, Patterdale, Penrith and Wasdale, plus the Lake District Mountain Rescue Search Dogs team and the Cumbrian Ore Mines Rescue Unit.
Mountain rescue teams are called out through the police, via the 999 system, to assist the statutory services – police, fire and ambulance. They also work with the air ambulance and Coastguard helicopters.
