Cockermouth lost 25-7 at home to Morpeth in Regional 2 North, but there were again plenty of positive for the Wasps coaching team.
The opening 25 minutes was outstanding from the young Cockermouth side who played some excellent attacking open rugby.
They were rewarded with a try under the posts from the galloping Alex Butterfield which was converted by Dan Woodcock.
It was disappointing no more tries were scored in this dominant period with left winger Joe Palmer inches short after a wonderful full-length break excellently set-up by Woodcock.
After this great start from the hosts Morpeth started to dominate, particularly up front and they got on top, the better team for the last 15 minutes. Their number eight crashed over for an unconverted try.
The opening period of the second-half was disappointing for the Wasps as they were frustrated not to find their shape or space as they did at the start of the contest.
Morpeth took two penalties and two converted tries from their physical dominance of the game.
As the game wore on Cockermouth dug deep and with the front row impressing to win more scrum ball the home side saw more possession.
Unfortunately no more try-scoring opportunities were created but they did stop the Morpeth scoring momentum.
Senior player Ian McDowell was prominent throughout the Wasps attacking spells and earned the Lindsay’s man of the match award.
It was a special day at the club because the Wasps women’s/girls team hosted Wigton Wildcats for their first game.
There were lots of learning from both sides with the Wasps team enjoying the opportunity to work on some training moves and score some great tries.
