Draw for Workington Reds at Whitby Town

Workington Reds scored a deserved late equaliser to earn a 1-1 draw at Whitby Town.

The hosts had become the first side to win at League leaders Radcliffe in mid-week but would have been fortunate to follow-up with a similar score against the Reds.

A late penalty from Jacob Gratton had won the game at Radcliffe and the same player put Whitby ahead against the Reds with a penalty on 77 minutes.

Finn Wallbank had made a good block but when he went to follow-up and clear he was adjudged to have fouled his opponent and the referee awarded the spot kick.

Throughout the game Reds probably had the better chances and were worth their point saver in the 90th minute.

A Brad Hubbold free kick was lifted into the box and it was recent recruit Joe Bunney who was on the end of it to find the net.

Bunney had been pushed forward out of defence in the later stages and showed his natural instincts to get on the end of the delivery. He had started his career as a striker.

Dav Symington brought the best out of the Whitby keeper on two occasions – with a couple of the five attempts he had on goal.

Niall Brookwell hit the bar with a looping header while Scott Allison almost found the net with a clever back heel.

After the game manager Danny Grainger had a special word for goalkeeper Danny Eccles who deputised for regular choice Jim Atkinson.

“Jim has a concussion so under the protocol cannot play and Danny did an excellent job.

“In think his attitude has been fantastic in all the time that he’s been with us. Sometimes he isn’t even on the bench but still comes and warms-up with Jim because he wants to be part of the team.

“Overall I thought everybody did well today. It was a very good team performance on what proved to be a tricky surface.

“Although we did have the better chances they hit the bar late on and I think probably a draw was a fair result.

“I will assess everyone over the next two days and then we go again with another tough game at Marine.” he said.
